Lost Wax Ring Process
- Get your design approved.
- Get your Wax.
- Sand and/or file the edges smooth and even. You want your wax to square on the angles and even on all the curves.
- Find out your finger size using the ring of finger sizers.
- Size the ring to your finger using the black and red wax ring sizer tool.
- Use the dividers and/or templates to layout the profile of your ring.
- Cut the profile of the ring using the band saw and files (wax file or bastard file).Make sure the ring is perfectly square on the angles and even on all the curves.
- Polish the wax until it is smooth and free of all scratches, use rough sand paper, smooth sand paper, 0000 steel wool, and tissue paper.
- Trace the profile edge of the wax that will be carved onto a piece of paper.
- Draw your design on that paper tracing.
- Using rubber cement glue the design onto the wax.
- Using a sharp metal stylus poke-a-dot along all of the lines on your drawing. Be careful not to poke deeply, barely penetrate the paper and that should do the trick.
- Remove the paper and connect the dots using the stylus, a graver or a modeling tool.
- Carve the design. Depending on the design you will use gravers, jewelry saws, chisels, modeling tools, drills, high speed cutting burs, sand paper, wax files, needle files, or X-acto knives.
- Repeat step 8 and polish the wax where it is needed and possible.
- Weigh wax ring
- Determine type of metal you want, silver, brass, white bronze or pewter.
- Sprue your ring.
- Place flask around your ring.
- Put paper around the flask with 2 inches of the paper sticking up above the flask.
- Put the sprued project in the correct cabinet.
- Get your ring back in metal.
- Using sanding burs, sanding machines, bastard files, needle files, and sand paper remove the sprue remains and prep the ring for polishing.
- Polish the ring. Use the Tripoli buff, the ultra-sonic cleaner, the steam cleaner, then the Rouge buff, the ultra-sonic cleaner, and the steam cleaner again.
- Turn in to Mr. Steadman with the approved design on the due date.
